Why is Magnesium essential?

Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in your body. Magnesium is crucial in many body functions, including muscle and nerve function, immune system health, heart health, creation of energy, blood sugar regulation, the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, serving as a building block for RNA and DNA, and the formation of neurotransmitters like serotonin.

We must balance Calcium and Magnesium in the body to maintain health. Most people have too much Calcium (from dairy products and dietary supplements) and not enough Magnesium.

Because Magnesium suppresses parathyroid hormone and stimulates calcitonin, it helps deposit Calcium into our bones, preventing osteoporosis. Without Magnesium, Calcium would become toxic, depositing itself in soft tissue, which can lead to arthritis.

Making sure your body is getting enough Magnesium helps you maintain good health in general and may help you manage stress, migraines, or muscle aches and pains.

An estimated 80 percent of people are deficient in Magnesium. It's not as common to have symptoms associated with inadequate magnesium levels. So, you may be low in Magnesium and not even realize it. The health consequences of magnesium deficiency are significant:

  • Seizures

  • Abnormal heart rhythm

  • Numbness and tingling

  • Personality changes

  • Fatigue and weakness

Talk to your doctor if you notice signs of a magnesium deficiency. You are more likely to be at risk of magnesium inadequacy if you live with type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, alcohol use disorder, or if you are on acid-reducing medications.

Enriching your intake of vitamins and minerals should always start with a food approach. If your diet alone is not enough, though, a magnesium supplement can help. But keep in mind that excessive supplemental magnesium can lead to symptoms such as nausea, abdominal cramping and diarrhea, flushing of the face, and lethargy.

Magnesium deficiency can be serious. Don't ignore feelings of tiredness or weakness. It is important to talk to your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.
