CPT Codes for monkeypox testing and vaccination

There is an update to CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), including a new laboratory test code for the orthopoxvirus and two codes for the vaccines utilized to prevent monkeypox infection.

The two new vaccine codes describe the currently available smallpox and monkeypox virus products, while the new laboratory test CPT code defines molecular diagnostic testing that detects the nucleic signature of an orthopoxvirus, including the monkeypox virus.

The code 90611 corresponds to the JYNNEOS vaccine used to prevent smallpox and monkeypox disease in adults 18 and older at high risk for smallpox or monkeypox infection. Bavarian Nordic manufactures this vaccine.

Code 90622 represents the ACAM2000 vaccine utilized for active immunization against smallpox disease for persons at high risk for smallpox infection. This vaccine is manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur Biologics Co.
